Jacksonville Jaguars camp observations from the joint practice on Aug. 19 against the Carolina Panthers at the Miller Electric Center, which featured some good work by the Jags in the red zone, several skirmishes and, most importantly, no reported injuries.
Player attendance
Not participating: RB LeQuint Allen Jr., WR Parker Washington, LBs Jalen McLeod and Jack Kiser, DE Zach Durfee, OGs Wyatt Milum and Patrick Mekari, WR Trebor Pena and NT Albert Regis.
In uniform, but: CB Jourdan Lewis did not take snaps in team periods. … DT DaVon Hamilton had his snaps reduced late in practice and he sat under a tent.
Liam Coen still uncertain about playing starters
Jaguars coach Liam Coen was hesitant to make a final decision on how many starters will play on Aug. 21 in the home preseason game against the Panthers. He did
say Nick Mullens would start at quarterback.
On Monday, Coen was leaning towards starting Trevor Lawrence at QB for a possession or two.
"I don't want to say either way yet, because I really got to go look at this tape, see how we kind of come out of it," Coen said. "I'll probably make a decision over the next 24 hours."
On the Jaguars-Panthers fight card
There were three scuffles between the Jags and Panthers, the first coming on the first team period of the day. Running back Bhayshul Tuten was given a bit of extra shove by Carolina's Lathan Ransom and Jags offensive linemen Anton Harrison and Emmanuel Pregnon jumped into the fray. Both sidelines cleared after that and it took about a minute to restore order.
The next extracurricular activity came when Carolina S Tre'von Moehrig hit WR Tim Jones a tad late, with Jones momentarily stunned. Jacksonville WR Austin Trammell came up and shoved Moehrig and there was another scuffle involving several other players.
Then, a shoving match broke out on the sideline between the OL Jerome Carvin and Carolina CB Chau Smith-Wade, with Jags' QB Carter Bradley among the peacemakers.
Jags get hot in the red zone
Lawrence and Mullens combined to account for five touchdowns in a six-play span during 11-on-11 red zone work. Lawrence first threw a 10-yard TD pass to TE Brenton Strange, after stepping up in the pocket, then flipped TD passes of 3 yards to TE Nate Boerkircher and WR Jakobi Meyers.
Mullens came in and after a run by DeeJay Dallas, J'Mari Taylor scored from 3 yards out on a sweep, with OT Kilian Zierer pulling and erasing a Carolina defender. On the next play Mullens zipped a TD pass over the middle to TE Tanner Koziol.
Big play
Mullens has had a couple of good practices since his sub-par performance in the preseason game against New Orleans last week, which followed some mediocre camp sessions. On his first play in an 11-on-11 period against Carolina, he zipped a pass over the middle to WR C.J. Williams, who split defenders Ransom and Zakee Wheatley and made a diving catch.
Thumbs up
Tuten ran hard between the tackles and went long distance on two runs.
Thumbs down
Lawrence was intercepted by S Nick Scott on a pass over the middle and Mullens was picked by S Demani Richardson.
Jaguars defensive notes
There were no fights on this field during 11-on-11 work, but certainly a lot of trash talking. … On QB Bryce Young’s first five-play sequence, CB Jarrian Jones broke up a pass and DE Josh Hines-Allen would have had a sack. … Former Florida Gator TE Feleipe Franks beat S Jalen Huskey for a red zone touchdown on a pass by QB Kenny Pickett. … On Young’s second drive against the Jaguars’ first-team defense, he was “sacked” twice (split between Hines-Allen/DT Matt Dickerson and DT Ruke Orhorhoro/DE Travon Walker. … CB Jabbar Muhammad had a nice pass break-up on a Pickett throw into the end zone. … The biggest thump/tackle was Huskey hitting Franks to the ground. Players converged, but nothing escalated. … On Young’s third drive, Walker jumped offside and the Panthers had a false start on a play that was allowed to continue (CB Travis Hunter pass break-up). … Jones had another pass break-up on Young’s final throw of the first team period. … The Jaguars must have busted a coverage when Young found tight end Mitchell Evans wide open down the left seam. … Another nice play by Muhammad was when he sniffed out a bubble screen pass to WR John Metchie III and drew a holding penalty on the Carolina blocker. … S Rayuan Lane III got the “sack” but also drew the wrath of the coaches by making contact with Pickett’s throwing arm. … DE B.J. Green would have had a “sack” on a Young touchdown pass.
Jaguars offensive notes
Lawrence was 13 of 19 and Mullens 7 of 10. Bradley and Joey Aguilar did not take any snaps in team periods, probably because they will get the bulk of the snaps in the preseason game on Aug. 21. … Lawrence's best pass was a deep route to Trammell for a touchdown. … Trammell almost made a catch when he adjusted in the air to a ball thrown behind him by Lawrence. … Cam Littlemade four field goals in a row vs. a live rush, then missed one from around 45 yards at the other end of the field, and made one from the same distance on the next snap. … The starting offensive line (left to right) was Harrison at tackle, Pregnon at guard, Robert Hainsey at center, Ezra Cleveland at guard and Walker Little at tackle. … Chris Rodriguez followed Tuten's long touchdown run with another breakaway scamper down the left side.
What's next for the Jaguars
The Jaguars are off on Aug. 20 and play the Panthers on Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. (CBS). They have another day off, then return to the practice field on Aug. 23.
