Jim Furyk won't play in his PGA Tour Champions event for first time

Jim Furyk will be a fixture next week at the Constellation Furyk & Friends PGA Tour Champions event he hosts at the Ocean Course at Hammock Beach in Palm Coast.

Just not with a golf club in his hand.

said he would not be playing in the tournament for the first time since it began in 2021 at the Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, saying his back doesn't hold up over a week that usually includes two pro-ams and 54 holes of competitive golf in Champions Tour events.

"I can play golf … everyday life is good," said the 17-time PGA Tour winner and 2003 U.S. Open Champion. "But playing five rounds of golf in a row puts a lot of stress on my back."

That's not to say Furyk won't be busy. He will be engaging with sponsors and fans every day, helping out more with tournament operations and appearing on Golf Channel's broadcast each day. Furyk began working with Golf Channel last March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and has since been an analyst at The Players and the Masters.

He's looking forward to helping showcase the Ocean Course, a Jack Nicklaus design that includes sweeping oceanside views from the ninth and 18th holes, and four other holes within sight of the Atlantic.

"The course is going to look amazing on TV," Furyk said. "Especially at Nos. 9, 15, 16, 17 and 18. There are elevation changes with the dunes along 9 and 18 and I think 9 is one of the best holes in Florida."

Furyk said his main job will be to mingle with sponsors, volunteers and fans and thank them for their role in the tournament, which has been voted the best on the Champions Tour twice in its first five years, and raised more than $5 million in charity.

"I want to be there for the people who have been the most important and done so much for this event to be successful," he said. "I'll keep myself busy."

Furyk tied for fourth and tied for third in the first two years in the Furyk & Friends. The tournament was his only start in 2025 and the only event he's played in 2026 was the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii in January.

Furyk, Justin Rose, Adam Scott lead Hall nominees

Furyk will get another shot at the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The Hall announced its nominees for the 2027 Induction Ceremony July 12 at St. Andrews in Scotland, during the week of The Open Championship. Furyk, Justin Rose, Adam Scott and Corey Pavin were nominated under the Male Competitor category, who are at least 45 years old or have been retired from golf for at least three years.

Rose and Scott are still formidable players and qualified for the Tour Championship this season.

The Hall of Fame received 162 public nominations for the Class of 2027. Each nominee was vetted by the Nominating Committee, and a 24-member Selection Committee, composed of media, WGHOF members and the WGHOF Board of Directors, will meet later this fall to vote on the final class of 2027.

A 75 percent vote (18) is required for election.

Korn Ferry showdown in Oklahoma

The 60-player field for the Korn Ferry Tour Championship will be determined this week when 90 players compete in the Compliance Solutions Championship Oct, 1-4 at the Patriots Golf Club in Owasso, Okla.

The top 60 on the points list after this week will advance to the Korn Ferry Tour Championship Oct. 8-11 at The Federal Club in Glen Allen, Va. The top 20 there will earn their PGA Tour cards for the 2027 season.

Among the players in Oklahoma are UNF graduates Nick Gabrelcik and Travis Trace (who also graduated from Sandalwood) and Bartram Trail graduate Julian Suri. Gabrelcik at 35th and Trace at 45th start the week inside the top 60 and are likely safe to reach the KF Tour Championship but Suri has some work to do: He's 76th on the points list.
