Liam Coen hasn’t been a head coach in the NFL for very long.
The 40-year-old has been in charge for just 18 Jacksonville Jaguars games, but finds himself tied for fifth in franchise history in coaching wins with 14.
With the Jaguars’ Week 1 win over Cleveland, Coen is tied with Gus Bradley and eight shy of Doug Pederson (22).
It should be noted, Bradley coached the Jaguars for 62 games from 2013-16, and it took him 53 games before garnering his 14th win.
Unfortunately, after getting that 14th win, the Jaguars lost nine games in a row and he was fired before finishing the 2016 season. The team immediately broke its losing streak the following week after Doug Marrone took over.
Coen is the fastest Jaguars coach to 14 wins, doing so in 18 games. Marrone
is next, getting his 14th win in his 22nd game. Pederson (24th game), Jack Del Rio (32nd) and Tom Coughlin (33rd) round out the other coaches with at least 14 wins.
After Coen, the list really lags. Urban Meyer had two wins in 13 games in 2021 before being fired.
Mike Mularkey had two wins in his lone season in Jacksonville.
Interim coach Mel Tucker had two wins in five games in 2011 when he replaced Del Rio, while the Jaguars’ other interim coach, Darrell Bevell, had one win in four games after he replaced Meyer.
How soon before Liam Coen can be the best Jaguars coach ever?
At this pace, not long.
Coughlin and Del Rio are tied for the franchise lead with 68 wins.
Coughlin was 68-60 in eight years as head coach while Del Rio was 68-71 in nine seasons.
Coen needs just eight wins to tie Pederson for fourth (22 wins) and nine wins to tie Marrone for third (23).
There’s a good chance Coen can do that before the end of his second season.
If he averages 10 wins a season from 2026 to 2031 (easier said than done), he would surpass Coughlin and Del Rio in Year 7 of his tenure.
Coughlin is still the only Jaguars coach to take the team to the playoffs in back-to-back years. In fact, he did it four years in a row, from 1996-99.
Should Coen get the Jags into the postseason this year, he'll be just the second coach in franchise history to do so.
