Baylee's blast: Baylee DeSmit's 20-yard strike moments before halftime extended her scoring streak and sparked Sporting Club Jacksonville to a 2-0 shutout of Dallas Trinity FC in Gainbridge Super League women's soccer on Aug. 29 at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
Moving up: Sporting Jax (3-0-0) climbed to first place in the eight-team league and DeSmit is now the leading scorer overall after her fourth goal in three games.
Rapp-id impact: New signing Cat Rapp needed only four minutes into her debut for her first Sporting Jax assist. When the Dallas defense misjudged a long ball from Sporting Jax goalkeeper Jamie Gerstenberg, Rapp broke away one-on-one against goalkeeper Neeku Purcell and set up Sophia Boman for a tap-in.
Quick
free kicks: Gerstenberg never had to make a save in her second shutout of the season, with Dallas (0-2-1) squandering its best chance when Jasmine Hamid missed a penalty kick wide left in stoppage time. … Ashlyn Puerta earned the assist on DeSmit's goal. ... Sporting Jax took 14 shots even without All-League selection Paige Kenton, out of action for the second consecutive week.
Up next: The Sporting Jax women next travel to DC Power FC at Audi Field in Washington for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Sept. 4.
