Trevor Lawrence collects 100th career touchdown pass in win over Browns

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jakobi Meyers wasn’t sure quarterback Trevor Lawrence would be able to see him. He was wide open in the end zone as Lawrence was flushed out of the pocket and forced to stop surveying the field as he fled Cleveland Browns' defenders.

But in an instant, Lawrence stepped up and uncorked a 32-yard pass on a string, arriving right in Meyers’ waiting hands.

It was Lawrence’s fourth touchdown pass of the day, putting the Jaguars ahead 30-0 (prior to the PAT) en route to their 34-10 victory, and one of several highlight plays for the sixth-year passer.

Lawrence completed 18 of his 23 passes for 245 yards and the four touchdowns without throwing an interception. It was a continuation of the progress he made during the offseason and in training camp.

“I feel like that’s Trevor and he can do that week-in and week-out,” offensive lineman Anton Harrison said. “It’s just the confidence he has.”

Lawrence earned MVP consideration last season. He may be the leader in the clubhouse after his Week 1 performance.

As if his dominating stat line wasn’t enough, he was pulled from the game with 8:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. That’s after the Jaguars shifted to a heavy run diet on offense as they nursed a big lead in the second half. So his numbers could’ve been even higher if the game was a tad bit more competitive.

Lawrence didn’t play a single snap in any of the team's three preseason games as head coach Liam Coen deemed the joint practices enough work for their team during training camp. There wasn’t any rust for Lawrence or the offense.

“I feel really comfortable, really confident in what we're doing. I think last year at this time, I knew what we were doing but it was still — you're still getting used to the game plan and the moving parts of the offense,” Lawrence said after the game.

Lawrence's second year in Coen’s system has provided him the autonomy to control what happens on offense. He’s able to audible into different plays based on the information presented by the defense before the snap.

Then it’s on him to make sure the ball goes where it’s supposed to. It’s a lot of responsibility, but he’s managed it well to this point.

Throughout training camp he was able to build a connection with several pass catchers. That connection showed up as 10 different players caught passes Sunday.

“It wasn’t a surprise to us, but I know a lot of people would be surprised by how well they played,” Meyers said of the receivers. “I feel like we’ve been seeing them do that all camp since the moment they got here. They’re smart, they’re reliable.”

Lawrence’s second touchdown of the day was his 100th touchdown pass in his career. He became the fourth player in league history to have at least 100 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns before turning 27.

It was a milestone for Lawrence, but rookie wide receiver Josh Cameron, who caught the pass, recorded a milestone of his own with the first touchdown of his career.

“Trevor threw me a great ball,” Cameron said after the game. “Then just completing the catch. I had some dances planned, but I kind of froze and just hit the little flex.”

Cameron and fellow rookie CJ Williams were able to get early reps with the team due to injuries to different receivers in training camp. That experience was apparent in the opening game as they both were given opportunities with Jacksonville’s starting offense.

Obviously, Parker Washington had a big day as he recorded five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, but the Jaguars were able to show just how deep their receiving corps is. Brian Thomas Jr. and Meyers had 40 yards a piece, Brenton Strange added 23 yards and Cameron reeled in two catches for 20 yards.

“A bunch of different guys getting open and winning up front, able to just progress and get through my progressions and get the right guy the ball. So those guys did a really good job up front protecting,” Lawrence said. “Just a clean day, I thought we operated pretty smoothly besides a couple of plays. Definitely a lot to build on and good start for us as an offense.”

Now, the page is turned to the Denver Broncos, who’ll certainly be ready for the Jaguars after losing last season at home to the “small market team.” The Jaguars will face the Broncos next week at 4:05 p.m. at Empower Field.
