A 29-year-old Jacksonville man died early Sunday, Oct. 4, when his SUV struck a parked tractor-trailer on I-295 on the city's Westside, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The accident happened at about 5:13 a.m. on southbound I-295, just south of Wilson Boulevard, FHP said in a news release.
The 36-year-old Haines City, Fla., driver of the tractor-trailer parked his vehicle on the inside shoulder of I-295 to assist the occupants of a disabled vehicle in the center lane of the highway when the SUV struck the rear of the tractor-trailer as he swerved to avoid the disabled vehicle, FHP said.
The incident is still under investigation.

of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported 117 fatalities in 15,292 crashes this year in Duval County. In Duval, St. Johns, Clay and Nassau counties, 163 fatalities in 20,645 crashes were reported during the same time frame.
