Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services has waived adoption fees and made a public appeal for people to adopt or foster dogs to help ease expected overcrowding. The shelter currently houses 433 dogs in 64 kennels with more soon to arrive from two large impound cases.
"Every kennel we free up by sending a pet to foster or to a loving home means we can help another animal in need," Animal Care Chief Michael Bricker said. "Being this full is hard on both the dogs and the staff caring for them … Lifesaving requires everyone in a community."
Over the past year, the shelter
had record lifesaving despite record demand: nearly 30% more animals, but 44.5% more adoptions. View pets via the shelter's new app — at jacksonville.gov/categories/mobile-apps/jaxpawfinder. The shelter is at 2020 Forest St.; hours are noon to 7 p.m. daily.

Mango is a 4-year-old, 41-pound female mixed-breed dog (ID No. A1468701). She is sweet, goofy, playful and affectionate. She loves belly rubs, rolling in the grass and long walks, as long as she can get some wiggles out. She has been at the shelter for about a year — its longest resident — but no one can figure out why.
Cider is a 15-week-old, 3-pound female domestic shorthair cat (ID No. A1481808). She may be shy at first, but don’t let that fool you — all of her crazy kitten energy will come out once she gets to know you. She has lived with dogs and other cats and will fit right in with any family.

Biggie is a 3-year-old male terrier dog (ID No. 83884). He is lovable, affectionate and friendly. He has a curious, playful spirit — always eager to explore, learn and share his joyful personality. He enjoys cuddles, companionship and being part of the action. He gets a long well with children and with other dogs, but a meet and greet is required.
Maya is a 7-year-old female pit bull terrier dog (ID No. 84181). She is sweet, affectionate, loving and mellow. She has a calm, gentle presence and adores being close to her people, whether that’s relaxing on the couch or enjoying a quiet stroll. She will happily lean in to be petted and look up at you with grateful eyes.

Brookie is a 1-year-old female mixed-breed dog (ID No. 61238385). She is still young, with so much love and life ahead of her, and is ready for a fresh start. She would love nothing more than to find a family to grow with. She’s hoping someone will see her and decide it’s finally her turn to go home.
