Jaguars training camp battles to watch during joint practice with Bucs

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made it to their final joint practice sessions of the preseason. They’re welcoming their Florida neighbors, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to town for two practices.

The team will get game-like reps in a controlled environment in those practices, giving them one final chance to evaluate themselves against opponents before the start of the regular season.

Because there are two practices, head coach Liam Coen said their might be changes to the organization of the second practice where they go lighter and do more 7-on-7 work as opposed to full team drills.

Still, with Baker Mayfield and company coming to town, expect good work for Jacksonville’s defense. And Liam Coen is no stranger to going against Todd Bowles’ defense, so there

will be good competition there as well.

Here are a few camp battles to during Jacksonville’s joint practices with Tampa Bay:

Jaguars' Josh Hines-Allen vs. Buccaneers' Tristian Wirfs

This battle is the definition of good on good. It’s the type of work that isn’t typically had during a regular training camp practice as players naturally pull back against teammates. There will be none of that between these two players. Wirfs is seen as one of the best offensive linemen in the league and Hines-Allen is one of the top players at his position. The trench battle will be one of elite proportions as Hines-Allen attempts to wreck Tampa’s offense.

Jaguars' interior offensive line versus Vita Vea

Newly paid defensive lineman Vita Vea is one of the top nose tackles in the NFL. He hasn’t practiced recently as he recovers from a back injury, but Bowles told reporters he’d return to the practice field when the team practices in Jacksonville. It doesn’t mean that he’ll compete in team drills, necessarily, but if he does it’ll be good work for former teammate Robert Hainsey and Jacksonville’s interior offensive line. The Jaguars have had their fair share of injury problems at offensive line in training camp. Going up against one of the top interior defensive linemen will be a good test, especially if they go with the potential trio of Ezra Cleveland, Hainsey and rookie Emmanuel Pregnon inside.

Jaguars' Walker Little/Anton Harrison vs. Buccaneers' Ruben Bain Jr.

Rookie pass rusher Ruben Bain will get another chance at facing off against professional offensive tackles in Jacksonville. He’ll line up against Walker Little and Anton Harrison, which’ll be a good gauge for both sides. Bain has been seen working alone after practice in Tampa and was selected No. 15 overall by the Buccaneers. His draft position will give him a chip on his shoulder as he tries to prove he fell too far in the selection process. Harrison won the left tackle job earlier in camp and has been tasked with protecting Trevor Lawrence’s blindside. Little is filling in at right tackle as Cole Van Lanen ramps up play ahead of the season. The practices will be the last chance for both players to get meaningful work in prior to the start of the season.
