Labor Day, the annual holiday honoring the American workforce, arrives Monday, Sept. 7, capping the last three-day weekend of summer 2026.
Thefederal holiday has been around for 132 years, having been approved by Congress in 1894.
Most federal, state and local government offices will be closed, as will banks, the Stock Exchange, the Postal Service and many corporate and business offices. But most grocers, retail stores and restaurants will be open.
Here's what you need to know:
Are Jacksonville-area government offices open Labor Day?
No. City of Jacksonville offices will be closed for the holiday, as will government offices in Clay, Nassau, Putnam and St. Johns counties and their municipalities.
Will Jacksonville Transportation Authority services operate on Labor Day?
All Fixed Route and First Coast Flyer Buses run on a Sunday schedule while the Skyway, NAVI, ReadiRide and Express
Select don’t operate.
The ticket office will be open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., customer service 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, go to jtafla.com.
Do area governments run garbage collection routes on Labor Day?
Garbage collection schedules for the city of Jacksonville, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns counties will not change. Putnam County will suspend waste pickup for the holiday, delaying pickup by one day.
Are state and federal offices open on Labor Day?
No. Labor Day is a state and federal holiday.
Are the U.S. Postal Service, UPS and FedEx open on Labor Day?
The Postal Service will close and there will be no regular mail delivery. but its Priority Mail Express will be available.
UPS pickup and delivery services will not be available on Labor Day and its stores will be closed. But UPS Express Critical service will be available.
Most of FedEx's pickup and delivery services will not be operational. FedEx Office will have limited service, Custom Critical will be available.
Are Publix, Target and Walmart open on Labor Day?
Yes.
Are Kohl's, Dillard's, Beall's and Belk open on Labor Day?
Yes.
Are Winn-Dixie and Aldi open on Labor Day?
Will-Dixie will be open. Aldi will be open but some locations will have limited hours.
Are Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club open on Labor Day?
Costco will be closed. BJ's Wholesale Club and Sam's Club will be open regular hours.
Are Food Lion, Kroger and Rowe's open on Labor Day?
Yes, but Kroger pharmacy and clinic hours may vary by location.
Are Whole Foods, Fresh Market and Trader Joe's open on Labor Day?
Yes.
Are IKEA, Lowe's and Home Depot open on Labor Day?
Yes.
Are Academy Sports + Outdoors and Dick's Sporting Goods open on Labor Day?
Yes.
Are CVS and Walgreens open on Labor Day?
Yes, but pharmacy hours may be reduced.
