Walmart has officially started its shift toward supporting tap-to-pay checkout methods, including Apple Pay and Google Pay — a move long requested by shoppers.
Despite being the nation's largest retailer, Walmart has spent years resisting the contactless payment technology that has become routine at many other stores. That meant shoppers who reached the checkout line expecting to use Apple Pay, Google Pay or tap-to-pay credit cards often found themselves out of luck.

The major grocery retailer recently began the first phase of its rollout Aug. 24, according to an August 2026 press release, bringing tap-to-pay payment options to select Walmart and Sam's Club stores.

Industry observers have long pointed to Walmart's desire to keep shoppers within its digital ecosystem as one reason the retailer resisted Apple Pay and other tap-to-pay technologies. Apple Pay also limits the amount of payment information shared with retailers, making it different from Walmart's own payment platform.
Does Sam's Club have tap-to-pay?
Sam's Club, which is owned and operated by Walmart Inc., is currently rolling out its tap-to-pay payment options alongside Walmart.
Currently, contactless payments are available at select clubs and expected to be available at all locations by the end of the year.
