DALLAS – While many Republicans have cheered President Donald Trump‘s brazen $5,000 offer to Americans if the GOP keeps control of the House and Senate in November, some loyal supporters are pushing back by calling the proposal nothing short of a bribe to American voters.
Among those disapproving was a tech investor hosting a fundraiser
in town with a group of Trump mega donors boosting Republican midterm efforts.Tech investor Joe Lonsdale, despite his allegiances, made it clear he's not a fan of an extraordinary offer Trump announced in the speech: a promise of $5,000 dividend checks to all American adults if Republicans maintain control of Congress.
"For the record, I am hugely in favor of winning the midterms, and love much about this admin,
but am strongly against bread and circus bribes," Lonsdale said in a post on X shortly after Trump's speech concluded.
"Spending over a trillion dollars to randomly send everyone in the country a check for five grand, including people who are not even net taxpayers ‒ which makes this, yes, welfare ‒ is idiotic. Sorry," conservative commentator Matt Walsh, a Trump supporter, wrote in a social media post. "This is flagrant bribery. Which I could maybe stomach if the plan itself was at least sensible and coherent, but it isn't."
Many questions about Trump's proposal remain unanswered. Chief among them: the finances.
During his convention speech, Trump said the dividend is possible because of the "tremendous strength and success" of the American economy, while suggesting that money collected from his tariffs would pay for the undertaking. Yet the price tag, an estimated $1.2 trillion, is far steeper than the amount of revenue the U.S. government has taken in from new tariffs.
It also seems doubtful Trump could unilaterally issue the checks without congressional approval. Congress, not the executive branch, is authorized to appropriate federal funds.
Former Republican Rep. Bob Good of Virginia, former chairman of the hardline conservative House Freedom Caucus, called Trump's pledge "a socialist vote-buying scheme that would cost nearly $1 trillion" in a post on X.
Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who has become a vocal critic of Trump, mocked the president's offer. "I don’t know about you all, but frankly I’m insulted by the notion that my vote this November could be bought for 5k. Not to mention the inflation this would cause," Massie wrote on X. "All things considered, I cannot in good conscience accept a penny less than 10k!"

In Dallas, many Republicans in town for the party's fist-ever midterm convention applauded Trump's election offer.
"I think it's a good strategy, and I also think it's good for the American people," said Rick Hunt, a Republican national committeeman from Washington. "If the tariff money is bringing that in, why not give it to the American people?"
Yet some MAGA diehards also acknowledged the pushback. Nina Webber, a Wyoming Republican committeewoman attending the two-day convention, told USA TODAY she doesn't believe the reaction is all positive among Republicans in her state.
"I think people might really appreciate it," Webber said from the lobby of the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, where she stayed with other Republican National Committee members for the convention. "I also think some people might look at it differently and have a negative approach on that. They might think: 'Why would he do that?'"
Regardless, she added: "What I hope it would do is get more people out to vote."
Even though the Republican Party has long touted fiscal conservativism as a core principle, Republicans at the convention didn't seem too worried about the potential financial impact of Trump's promise.
Georgia Republican National Committeewoman Amy Kremer tied Trump’s proposal to the Republican Party’s evolution under his leadership.
“I think that if America is in a position to do that, then that’s really good,” said Kremer as she waited in her hotel before the second day of the convention. “President Trump has transformed this party. He’s transformed politics. The Republican Party is representing the working class, middle-class Americans.”
Kremer was active in the tea party movement, which arose in opposition to government spending during President Barack Obama’s first term. She said spending remains a concern, but Trump is “trying to make it easier” on Americans struggling with high prices for goods such as gas and beef.
Other Republicans applauded Trump's idea but questioned whether he can deliver. During his second term, Trump previously floated a $5,000 dividend check from cost savings though the Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE, and a $2,000 tariff check. He executed neither.
"For me, I know enough about politics to know that it may happen, it may not happen," said Jerome Spell, who drove up to the convention from Windom, Texas, to attend the convention. He said the goal right now for Republicans is just to maintain control of Congress.
His wife, Violet Spell, a precinct chair for Texas Republicans, said with a laugh: "I'll be looking forward to see if it happens." She later added: "If everything works out right, and we can afford it, that would be OK."
