Why are No Kings protests on Oct. 17?
The Oct. 17 events mark a shift from previous No Kings mobilizations, which largely focused on rallies and protests. Organizers are now putting a greater emphasis on voter turnout ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin told USA TODAY that organizers want to turn the movement's previous demonstrations into voting and organizing efforts. Local events are expected to vary, with some communities holding marches, neighborhood gatherings and events encouraging participants to make plans to vote early.
The White House has pushed back on the movement. Spokesperson Lauren Bis dismissed the Oct. 17 action in comments to USA TODAY, questioning what “king” demonstrators were protesting and criticizing the organizers.
