What is the story about?

After three weeks of high school football games in the Bucks County area, it's time to take a look at the small-school rankings.

Yes, we did preseason rankings for our small school (Class A, 2A and 3A) and big school (4A, 5A, 6A) programs, but that was before games were played.

Now we have a sample to draw from, and it's time to rank the teams.

Next week, we'll have the big-school rankings and the small-school rankings again in two weeks.

Enough of the confusing talk. Let's get to it. Team records are in parentheses.

1. Archbishop Wood (2-1)

After going 4-7 a year ago and moving down from Class 4A to 3A this season, the Vikings have vastly improved.

They opened the season with wins over Central Bucks South and Germantown Academy before giving defending PIAA Class 6A La Salle

a tough go in a 38-24 loss last week.

Senior running back D'Andre Webb is averaging nearly 10 yards a carry so far and has scored six touchdowns.

This week, the Vikings will have a tough test against Class 4A Conwell-Egan.

2. Bristol (1-2)

The Warriors, who were fourth in our preseason rankings, have just one win, but their losses have come against unbeaten Archbishop Carroll and 2-1 Executive Education Academy of District 11.

And sophomore quarterback Alex Diaz is growing into the role quickly as his 234-yard passing effort against EEA, with three touchdowns and a rushing touchdown, can attest.

3. Morrisville (3-0)

Ranked fifth in the preseason, the Bulldogs are the only unbeaten team in the small-school rankings.

They've allowed just two touchdowns in three games and are coming off a 35-0 win over Academy of the New Church last week.

Senior quarterback Merik Johnson ran for 106 yards and two scores in the win over ANC.

4. New Hope-Solebury (2-1)

Unranked in the preseason, the Lions opened up with back-to-back wins over rival South Hunterdon (N.J.) and Kensington before falling to unbeaten Pequea Valley (District Three) 42-6 last week.

To put that loss in better perspective, Pequea Valley has outscored its first three opponents 112-12.

New Hope senior quarterback Jon Scrima ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns in the opener and threw for four scores against Kensington.

5. Lansdale Catholic (0-3)

The Crusaders were our top-ranked team in our preseason poll, but three straight losses (albeit to teams with a combined 6-2 record) have dropped them to fifth.

The Crusaders, who reached the PIAA Class 2A semifinals last year, have moved up to Class 3A this season and open up Philadelphia Catholic League Blue Division play this week against fellow Class 3A foe Archbishop Ryan on Saturday.
