The Nueces County Commissioners Court named Krista Champine as the county's new tax assessor-collector on July 29.
Current Tax Assessor-Collector Kevin Kieschnick announced his resignation in July to pursue a private sector job. In his resignation letter, Kieschnick recommended Champine as his replacement. Champine is currently director of property tax and voter registration in the tax assessor-collector office.
The county tax assessor-collector is tasked with calculating property tax rates for the county, collecting property taxes for the county, processing motor vehicle title transfers, issuing motor vehicle registrations and licenses, registering voters and collecting various fees for the state and county. Tax assessor-collector offices may
also collect taxes for other local taxing entities and may conduct elections.
The role is elected. Kieschnick, who will leave his role on Aug. 31, was reelected for a 2025 to 2029 term.
The Commissioners Court opened the role for applications and received two applications including Champine's. Champine will take over the role Sept. 1.
Champine has more than 20 years of experience in the profession, including 13 years in Nueces County, according to her letter of interest. She advanced from an entry-level accounting assistant position to leadership positions as motor vehicle supervisor, finance manager and property tax director.
Champine has a professional county collector certification and is pursuing a county tax office professional designation.
