The director of Corpus Christi Animal Care Services submitted her resignation, effective immediately, Aug. 27, according to City Manager Peter Zanoni.
Kathleen Chapa departed to focus on finishing graduate school as she works to transition to a new career working within a school district, Zanoni said in a message.
Cynthia Martinez, assistant director of the department, will be interim director.
"We are still working with the executive recruiter who is conducting a nationwide search for an ACS Director," Zanoni said.
Since 2025, Animal Care Services has been working to correct a range of deficiencies after an assessment by an outside firm identified 170 recommendations
for improvement regarding space for animals, staffing, facility upkeep and other areas.
The division became a stand-alone department in June 2024.
