The former Crossley Elementary School building, which has been abandoned since 2001, is currently undergoing demolition, according to a spokesperson for the Port of Corpus Christi.
The port officially purchased the property, at 2512 Koepke St. in the Hillcrest neighborhood, on Aug. 28 from Tabernacle of Praise Church.
The demolition began on Oct. 5 and is set to be complete by Feb. 2, 2027, port spokesperson Lisa Hinojosa said.

Crossley opened in 1926 to serve the historically Black neighborhood of Hillcrest and was one of the only schools open to Black students during the era of segregation.
The school closed in 2001 due to age, proximity to refineries
and low enrollments.
Currently, the port does not have any plans to redevelop the property.
