What to know for 2026
One of the most dominant defenses in the region was hit heavily by graduation, but coach Clynt Elwood said that although they may not have started last season, a number of players saw a lot of playing time in Flour Bluff's 10-win campaign. On offense, the Hornets are breaking in a new quarterback for the second consecutive year, with offensive coordinator Brian Baker looking at Mike Lawrence and Kaleb Wright at the position. Whoever gets the call will have stout running back Sam Smith
and tight end Ransom Watson back to rely on as Flour Bluff again sets its sights on a district title and deep playoff run.
Flour Bluff head coach Clynt Elwood on new starters stepping up in 2026
"We've had a great fall camp, everyone is meshing and we are continuing to strengthen our unity and our brotherhood. Those guys (on defense) have been competing like crazy since the spring. We have leaders like Ray Aguilar and Landon Meschi, but we (also) have guys that played a lot on varsity, but may have not been starters on paper. Guys know that their number could be called at any moment, so they are always doing their homework. Everybody knows our expectation here. It is very hard to keep a starting position here. Our 2s and 3s always know they have an opportunity to become the 1. Everyone always has to stay on their 'A' game. This team is full of guys that respond well. We always talk about not flinching when things don't go our way, so we put them in a lot spots where they have to respond to adversity.
Elwood on veteran running back Sam Smith
"He is on our leadership team and he understands what it takes to be great. He uses his experience on varsity to share that knowledge and the expectations (with others) as the example. He is a lot more vocal now and he works extremely hard. He lives in the weight room so we want those guys to follow in his footsteps."
