Before the current school year, Kostoryz, Sanders, Fannin and Travis elementary schools and Browne, Martin and Haas middle schools closed.
This means that several other Corpus Christi Independent School District campuses have seen big swings in enrollment, taking in students from the closed campuses.
However, school district data indicates that none of the schools were pushed over capacity.
Here's what the data shows about Corpus Christi ISD school growth and size:
See which schools gained or lost students between school years
Corpus Christi ISD provided school enrollment figures for each Corpus Christi ISD campus as of Sept. 4, a few weeks into the 2026-27 school year.
The official school enrollment data the school district reports to the Texas Education Agency is typically collected a little later in the fall
semester. Comparing the Sept. 4 enrollment counts with 2025-26 official enrollment data is still useful for understanding which campuses are seeing the biggest swings, though the official 2026-27 data might look a little different later in the year.
Compared to its 2025-26 enrollment, Adkins Middle School has doubled in size, going from 447 students last fall to 941 students as of Sept. 4.
Grant Middle School, already a bigger campus with more than 750 students last fall, gained about 350 students.
Hamlin Middle School gained close to 250 students. It had about 450 last year and now has about 700.
Cunningham Middle School at South Park gained short of 250, bringing its total to over 900. Driscoll Middle School gained over 100, increasing to nearly 600.
Though Lexington Middle School wasn't on the list to receive new zoned students as a result of the closures, it also saw an enrollment jump of over 160 students. Creekside Elementary School, another recent addition to the school district located in the far Southside near Oso Creek, gained just short of 100 students.
At the elementary level, Dawson Elementary School grew the most with nearly 200 more students. Garcia Elementary School gained close to 185. Los Encinos and Hicks elementary schools gained about 100 each. Yeager Elementary School gained about 90.
Galvan, Allen and Houston elementary schools all gained between 25 and 50 new students.
On the other end, Webb, Jones, Barnes, Shaw, Club Estates, Moore, Gibson, Oak Park, Kolda and Mireles elementary schools had at least 20 fewer students on Sept. 4 compared to last fall. Baker and Kaffie middle schools also had two to three dozen fewer students.
At the high school level, Ray High School gained about two dozen students, while Miller and Carroll high schools had over 100 fewer each. Moody High School also had close to 50 fewer students on Sept. 4 compared to the previous fall.
These figures might change before the Texas Education Agency's school fall data snapshot date in late October.
How full are Corpus Christi ISD campuses?
When the Corpus Christi ISD school board was considering the campus closures, one of the items of discussion was campus capacities.
District staff reported that some campuses, particularly in older Corpus Christi neighborhoods, didn't have enough students to fill them. This wasn't the case for every campus that was closed, but did play a role in rezoning plans.
The Caller-Times reviewed copies of the district's 2024 updated long-range facility master plan, which includes figures on each campus' capacity without portables, as well as capacity figures shared during school closure discussions and when new campuses Lexington Middle School and Creekside Elementary School were opened.
According to this data, none of the district's campuses are over-filled.
However, this does not mean that no campuses make use of portables, or that spaces might not feel full to students or staff.
Last spring, for instance, the Corpus Christi ISD Board of Trustees approved a $1.5 million contract to add weight room space at Veterans Memorial High School due to growth in campus athletic programs.
Where are Corpus Christi ISD's largest schools? Which campuses are still small?
Each of Corpus Christi ISD's traditional high schools number over 1,000 students. Veterans Memorial High School has nearly 2,000.
But the district does offer special high school programs where students can experience a smaller school environment. Branch Academy and Collegiate High School are both early college high schools, serving in the range of 250 and 400 students. The district's alternative high school, Coles High School, serves just over 100.
The district's largest middle school, Grant Middle School, has over 1,000 students. Driscoll Middle School is the smallest middle school with just short of 600 students.
The district's smallest elementary schools serve between 300 and 400 students: Allen, Menger, Schanen Estates, Yeager, Gibson, Houston and Club Estates elementary schools.
Zavala, Smith, Oak Park, Los Encinos, Moore and Jones serve between 400 and 500 students.
Webb, Galvan, Shaw, Mireles, Creekside, Windsor Park and Berlanga serve between about 550 and 600 students.
Hicks, Kolda, Barnes, Garcia, Metro and Calk-Wilson serve between 600 and 700 students.
Cullen Place and Dawson elementary schools are currently the district's largest elementary campuses, serving about 750 and 770 respectively as of Sept. 4.
