Data shows that Corpus Christi’s property tax rate this year — proposed to remain the tax rate for the next fiscal year — falls fifth among the eight largest cities in Texas.

Corpus Christi’s property tax rate, at about 59.9 cents per $100 valuation, is less than that reported in El Paso, Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington. The highest is that of El Paso, at about 75.9 cents per $100, now proposed at nearly 80.9 cents per $100, according to municipal documents.

The property tax rates in San Antonio, Austin and Houston, meanwhile, are less than Corpus Christi’s — the lowest being Houston’s, at about 51.9 cents per $100 valuation, according to records.

Corpus Christi’s property

tax rate for the upcoming year is scheduled for a decision in September. The first vote is set to coincide with a public hearing on Sept. 1, followed by a second vote affirming the first on Sept. 8.

The City Council agreed Aug. 11 to set the property tax rate no higher than the current. However, it can decide to set the property tax rate lower than the one at present.

The recommendation of maintaining the current tax rate into next year supports the proposed budget.
