The rate you pay in Corpus Christi property taxes will remain unchanged in the coming year, but it still effectively represents an increase.
The current property tax rate is 59.97 cents per $100 valuation.
That will continue into the coming year, following approval Sept. 8 with the votes of seven City Council members: Carolyn Vaughn, Sylvia Campos, Gil Hernandez, Roland Barrera, Mark Scott, Everett Roy and Kaylynn Paxson.
City Councilman Eric Cantu voted in dissent.
Mayor Paulette Guajardo abstained, saying that it would be irresponsible to vote on a budget that she had been unable to discuss with council members or staff during a 30-day suspension, which had ended the day prior.
Paxson
disagreed with the mayor's decision, asserting that Guajardo had opportunity in the meeting to see the presentation and that the budget was available online.
Although the tax rate isn’t going up, some property owners will pay more if their properties increased in valuation.
Adopting the same property tax rate as this year for the next equates to about a 0.5% increase, city officials said.
