Corpus Christi ISD is the largest school district in the Coastal Bend region by tens of thousands of students, but statewide, 40 school systems are larger.
Compared to the top 50 largest Texas public and charter school systems, the Corpus Christi Independent School District ranks roughly in the middle of the pack based on the Texas Education Agency's A-F school accountability rankings.
With just over 32,000 students last year, Corpus Christi ISD was the 41st largest public school system in the state by student count, according to Texas Education Agency data.
Like many of its large-district peers, Corpus Christi ISD earned a B rating for the 2025-26 school year.
School districts containing campuses that consistently underperform for several years
are at risk of a state takeover, which is when the Texas Education Agency commissioner temporarily removes elected school board members and replaces them with his own appointees.
Though Corpus Christi ISD has had a handful of D-rated campuses over the years, it has historically been able to make swift enough improvements to avoid a takeover.
This is one way that Corpus Christi ISD has differed from several of its large district peers. The Houston Independent School District has been under a takeover since 2023. The Fort Worth Independent School District's state takeover began in 2025. The Austin Independent School District is also currently at risk of a takeover.
Out of 55 campuses, only four Corpus Christi ISD schools earned an D. No Corpus Christi ISD schools earned an F. More than 92% of rated CCISD campuses earned an A, B or C.
In the Brownsville Independent School District, about 98% of rated campuses earned an A, B or C. All campus scores in Brownsville ISD were A's or B's except for one C campus and one D campus.
In comparison, nine out of 83 San Antonio Independent School District schools earned F's. Twenty-five earned D's.
In the Houston Independent School District, five out of 272 campuses earned F's. Nine earned D's.
