Corpus Christi police arrested a man on Aug. 4 who they said drove while intoxicated through safety barriers into a Southside construction zone and later fired gunshots in the area.
Joel Garza, 44, is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct with a firearm, the Corpus Christi Police Department said in an online post.
At 2:40 a.m. on Aug. 4, officers responded to a report of a suspected intoxicated driver who drove through signage and safety barriers into a marked construction zone at Yorktown Boulevard and Oso Parkway, the city of Corpus Christi said in a news release.
The person fled the scene on foot before officers arrived.
At 4:01 a.m. officers were called to the same location after receiving reports of gunfire,
the news release said. Witnesses reported that the driver had returned with several people and fired shots into the air.
The man left the area once again before police arrived on scene, the news release said.
Garza was in custody at the Nueces County Jail as of the morning of Aug. 5 on bail totaling $80,000 for both charges.
