A 60-day burn ban is in effect for unincorporated areas of Nueces County.
County commissioners approved the ban during their regular meeting on Aug. 19.
The ban was recommended by the Office of Emergency Management due to a lack of rainfall and increased fire danger from dry vegetation.
The ban prohibits all outdoor burning including beach bonfires outside city limits, according to the order.
The ban does not prohibit burning activities related to firefighting training, public utility, natural gas pipeline or mining operations, agricultural harvesting or planting, or burns conducted under the Natural Resources Code.
Household trash may only be burned when trash collection services are unavailable.
Burning must be done in an enclosed container, such
as a metal barrel, with a spark and flame preventive screen.
Backyard barbecues and cookouts are permitted.
Outdoor welding and hot work activities are allowed only while in compliance with fire code regulations.
A violation of the burn ban order can result in a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine not exceeding $500.
