Several top students in the Coastal Bend excelled in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced the names of 16,000 semifinalists from across the country on Sept. 9. More than 1.2 million high school juniors entered the program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
The highest scorers in each state, less than 1% of entrants, were named semifinalists.
Six students from school districts in Corpus Christi, Alice, Portland and Bishop earned the designation.
Here are the semifinalists from the Coastal Bend:
- Eli Walker, Alice High School
- Sebastian Molina, Bishop High School
- Lauryn Lane, Flour Bluff High School
- Kaylee Xu, Flour Bluff High School
- Samhitha Buchireddy, Veterans Memorial High School
- Joshua Yi, Gregory-Portland High School
To become a finalist, semifinalists must submit a detailed scholarship
application with a high school official. Finalists will be notified in February.
