New sidewalks on North Beach, the Southside and the London area may be spurred by more than $3.5 million in federal grants — or, at least, officials hope so.
The Corpus Christi City Council on Sept. 15 unanimously approved moving forward with a series of applications requesting federal funding, distributed by the Corpus Christi Metropolitan Planning Organization.
About $6.6 million is available for the 2027-2030 fiscal years, according to a presentation included as part of the agenda.
Each of the three grants, if awarded by the MPO, would require cash matches from the city, with separate costs for design work, records show.
Projects for the funding are competitive, officials said.
It’s expected the MPO will make a decision about which projects will be
awarded the federal grant funding in December, according to the presentation.
Here’s a breakdown of the grants sought, as shown in city documents.
Construction of new sidewalk on North Beach
Location: The 5-foot-wide sidewalk is planned to travel down the frontage road from Lighthouse Pointe apartments to the underpass near Beach Avenue.
Grant request: About $1 million
Cash match and design work funding: About $627,000 from North Beach’s tax incentive reinvestment zone revenue.
Additional trail connections in Southside network
Location: New 8-foot-wide sidewalk from York Crossing Pedestrian Bridge to Cimarron Boulevard and a stretch from Cimarron Boulevard to Rodd Field Road.
Grant request: About $1.1 million
Cash match and design work funding: About $683,000 from voter-approved 2024 bond.
London Independent School District safety improvements
Location: A new sidewalk along London Pirate Road, reaching from London Elementary School to about one-tenth of a mile short of London Towne Boulevard.
Grant request: About $1.3 million
Cash match and design work funding: About $779 million via the city’s streets fund.
