Two Coastal Bend educators have been tapped to join a new state commission aimed at improving public education.
The Texas Classroom Commission, made up of public school educators from across the state, will develop recommendations for lawmakers on classroom instruction, teacher support, the learning environment and preparing students for success ahead of the next state legislative session.
Gov. Greg Abbott appointed 21 educators to the commission on July 29.
The list includes Abbigale Grataski of the Calallen Independent School District and Nidia De La Cerda of the Tuloso-Midway Independent School District.
"Texas teachers have the talent, understanding, and expertise to ensure that every Texas student succeeds," Abbott said in a July 29 news release.
"That’s why educators must be at the center of the conversation. The Texas Classroom Commission will help build on our historic investments in public education and deliver recommendations that strengthen classroom instruction, support teachers, and prepare the next generation of Texans."
The commission bears similarities to the Teacher Vacancy Task Force, formed in 2022. The Teacher Vacancy Task Force, which included Corpus Christi Independent School District Superintendent Roland Hernandez and teacher Cynthia Hopkins, as well as Brandon Chandler of the Gregory-Portland Independent School District, recommended increasing teacher compensation and providing incentives, improving the teacher pipeline and improving the training, support and resources available to teachers.
