The National Weather Service is investigating what might have been a tornado that swept through Greene County and other parts of East Tennessee.
Menacing clouds hung over the Great Smoky Mountains the evening of June 28, and several social media users shared videos looking up at what they said seemed to be a tornado.
Earlier in the afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook that encompassed much of East Tennessee and warned of damaging winds and isolated thunderstorms. The warning said hail, tornados and flooding were a lower risk for the area.
The morning of June 29, the NWS in Morristown had survey teams out in Greene County assessing damage to determine whether it was caused by a tornado or straight line winds, according to meteorologist Sam Roberts.
The NWS hasn't received any reports of damage in Blount County.
"We’ve done some digging around this morning, and we don't have damage in that area," Roberts said. "That doesn't mean we won't. We just don't have damage reports yet."
The NWS plans to determine June 29 whether a tornado came through East Tennessee.
