A man who struggled with Knoxville police during a trespassing arrest died in police custody and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
The Knoxville Police Department said in a news release officers were called to the BreadBox convenience store on Sutherland Avenue for a man who was refusing to leave.
Police said "he resisted and a struggle ensued" this afternoon, and the man had visible injuries when he was handcuffed.
"He was alert, conscious and walked to the cruiser under his own power," the release says.
While still at the scene, his condition deteriorated and medical staffers had to start CPR. He was taken to a hospital and died there.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating, which is routine for in-custody
deaths.
