Tennessee's 2026 Adidas Smokey Grey football uniforms pay tribute to Gen. Robert Neyland, the Vols' iconic coach.
On Aug. 20, UT unveiled its new Smokey Grey alternate uniform in a video featuring All-SEC linebacker Arion Carter, Neyland's voice and his old desk and other historical artifacts from the coach's career.
More details, as well as photos of the new uniform, will be released later in the day.
The new Smokey Grey alternate uniform features elements of Neyland's coaching career at Tennessee from 1926-52, as well as his military background and on-field tactics.

This is the fifth edition of the Smokey Grey alternate uniforms, but the first with Adidas as UT's official apparel provider. Nike
produced it from 2022-25.
In July, UT revealed its new orange, white and dark mode Adidas uniforms.
Explaining design of Adidas Smokey Grey uniform
Tennessee's in-house creative agency, 151 Creative, worked with Adidas to create each new uniform.
The Smokey Grey design is filled with images associated with Neyland:
- Helmet: Evoking the leather helmets worn by the Vols from the program's inception to 1949, the cross pattern and stitching details are pulled from the 1938 national championship helmet. A bold star appears on the back of the helmet, a nod to Neyland's status as a Brigadier General. Neyland's signature appears on the back bumper, and a stenciled "UT," like those worn on Neyland-era practice gear, appears on the front.
- Trefoil: Three-leaf design represents the heritage, diversity and global reach of the Adidas brand, making it the perfect complement to the overall story of the Neyland Legacy uniforms. Tennessee will be among the few college football teams to ever don the trefoil logo.
- Neyland patch: The iconic image of Neyland kneeling supplies the silhouette for a patch, which also features his signature.
- Shoulder blueprint: Neyland served in the Army Corps of Engineers, and he used his knowledge and vision to help expand Shields-Watkins Field into what eventually became Neyland Stadium. Blueprints from the 1948 expansion appear on the shoulders.
- Interlocking UT: A 1952 photo features Neyland wearing a rarely seen baseball-inspired interlocking UT. Neyland played baseball at Army from 1913-16.
- Grey base and cream accents: UT adopted orange and white as its primary colors in 1891, but that didn't become the staple of its uniforms until the late 1930s. In the early decades, the Vols wore a mix of orange, white, grey, black and tan. The cream is a throwback to the tan leather helmets and football pants on that early era.
- Number font: The sizing and font of the jersey numbers are like those used by Neyland's 1938 and 1939 championship teams.
- "Carry the fight" slogan: This opening classic line from Neyland's game maxims is featured in his handwriting on the inside back collar.
- Perforations: There's a checkerboard perforation on the front collar referencing Neyland's call for players to "charge the checkerboards" featured atop Ayres Hall, north of Shields-Watkins Field. The base of the jersey features traction stripe perforations, recalling the vertical lines that appeared on UT's earliest uniforms.
Evolution of Smokey Grey uniforms since 2022
This is the fifth version of UT's Smokey Grey uniforms. The Vols first wore them for the 2022 win at LSU.
In the 2023 season, UT’s “Artful Dodger” Smokey Grey uniforms paid homage to trailblazer and former Vols quarterback Condredge Holloway. He was the first Black player to start at quarterback for an SEC program.
In the 2024 season, UT wore its "Volunteer State" Smokey Grey uniform, which was inspired by the Tri-Star emblem on the state flag.
In the 2025 season, UT wore its "Volunteer Spirit" Smokey Grey uniform, which paid tribute to American military service and Tennessee's volunteer tradition, beginning with Davy Crockett.
