Tennessee football fans gathered outside Arkansas’ Donald W. Reynolds Stadium to make sense of the rollercoaster game they had just witnessed.
It was an orange-clad mixture of passionate fans from different parts of Tennessee and family members of UT players. They had traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to see a Tennessee win, and they got what they came for.
So why weren’t they universally euphoric after that Oct. 10 game?
Well, the Vols had to rally to win 24-17 over Arkansas, the worst team in the SEC. A week earlier, they pulled out a 24-14 win over Auburn, another bottom-tier SEC team.
One UT fan, appearing to speak to no one in particular, summed up the vibe as he exited Arkansas’ stadium: “That was super ugly, but at least we won.”
Tennessee
fans don’t quite know how to feel about the first half of the 2026 season. The Vols have a 5-1 record and a No. 14 ranking in the polls.
But coach Josh Heupel’s offense has sputtered. His quarterback carousel between Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre hasn’t stabilized. Offensive line play has been inconsistent. And despite UT’s record, it’s played like a middling SEC team and faces tougher challenges ahead.
The Vols (5-1, 2-1 SEC) play No. 7 Alabama (5-1, 3-1) on Oct. 17 (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC) at Neyland Stadium. The game brings a sense of dread for some UT fans and hope for others. Both seem reasonable.

Sensible fans can be happy and frustrated with Tennessee football
Those two camps in the Tennessee fan base have bubbled to the surface on social media, message boards and sports talk radio since the Arkansas game.
They’re both passionate in their own way, but they express it differently.
Find a UT fan that’s grateful to be 5-1, and you’ll find another who believes that fan is blinded by orange-colored glasses. After all, there are indisputable problems with the Vols’ performances.
Conversely, find a Tennessee fan that’s angry despite the 5-1 record, and you’ll find another who believes that fan is a malcontent. After all, a victory is more important than how a team played, so enjoy the win.
Both are reasonable perspectives. The disconnect comes in why those fans feel that way.

Some fans realize Tennessee could be worse than 5-1
Many fans find satisfaction from a bird’s-eye view.
They compare where UT football is now to where it’s been. Heupel’s teams have posted a 5-1 record in five straight seasons. UT did that only once (2016) in the previous 15 seasons.
Former UT player Cooper Mays brought this to light responding to frustrated fans on social media following the Arkansas game.
“Pretty cool to see the shift of our fan base going from beggars to choosers the last decade,” Mays wrote in an X post. “Such a luxury to be upset about having a 5-1 start and top 15 team in the country. Hope Vol fans enjoy it.”

Mays was not only an All-SEC lineman for the Vols under Heupel, but he knows the program’s history well. His father, Kevin, was a standout UT lineman in the 1990s. And his brother, Cade, was also an All-SEC lineman when the Vols transitioned from struggling under Jeremy Pruitt to competitive under Heupel.
The bird’s-eye view also applies to scanning fan experiences around the SEC.
On the same day that the Vols barely beat Arkansas, other SEC teams suffered upsets. Texas, LSU and Florida lost as favorites. And eight SEC teams already have two losses while Tennessee has just one.
It's OK to be dissatisfied with a win if harder games are ahead
But that perspective only considers the past and present. Fans frustrated over the Vols’ performance are looking ahead. They know the level at which UT has played so far won’t cut it if a playoff bid is the goal.
So it’s reasonable to be unhappy despite a 5-1 record because fans know the Vols must be better.
UT’s offense has scored only seven touchdowns total in three SEC games. And Heupel’s play-calling hasn’t overcome issues on the side of the ball in which he specializes.
The Vols won’t beat Alabama without improvement. They might not beat Kentucky or LSU or others unless they’re better in the second half of the season than the first.
But those games haven’t been played yet, so complaining about hypothetical losses can only go so far.
That’s why some Tennessee fans are so conflicted about this 5-1 record. They realize it’s a positive result. But they’re also knowledgeable enough to see looming problems that have no obvious solutions.
That turns excitement into anxiety for any college football fan. One emotion will overwhelm the other when Tennessee plays Alabama, and the cycle will repeat each gameday until it's clear where this season is headed.
