The man shot and killed by a Knox County Sheriff's Office deputy at a Weigel's gas station Oct. 26 has been identified as 31-year-old Caleb Barber.
KCSO deputies responded at about 7:30 a.m. to 911 calls about a person with a gun "acting erratically" in the parking lot of a Weigel's on Clinton Highway, according to a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation news release.
A deputy "made contact" with Barber, the TBI said, and "the situation escalated" for reasons that are under investigation. The deputy fired shots, killing Barber.
Barber was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured in the incident.
The TBI is investigating the shooting which is routine in police shootings, and the agency will determine what led to the fatal shooting. The agency's
findings will be submitted to the Knox County District Attorney's Office.
The TBI has been asked to investigate 44 police shootings statewide in 2026, according to the agency. Three of those involved KCSO, and one involved the Knoxville Police Department.
