Gay Street will be closed for over a week to allow crews to stage a crane to work on Embassy Suites and the Miller's Building next door.
The Gay Street closure is in effect now through 6 p.m. Aug. 31. Traffic will be rerouted around the site and Market Street between Union and Clinch avenues will be temporarily changed to one-way southbound.
Businesses will be open, but pedestrians will have to navigate through closures as well. These sidewalks will be closed:
• West side of Gay Street, between Union Avenue and the Embassy Suites entrance
• South sidewalks on Union Avenue, between Strong Alley and Gay Street
• Brief sidewalk closures on the north side of Union Avenue and west side of Gay Street

"Plan ahead and watch for detour signs," the city advised.
