Walking along the Second Creek Greenway, pedestrians can enjoy shade from the trees, the quiet creek below, yellow caution tape and the noise of heavy machinery.
The University of Tennessee at Knoxville has taken on a construction project along Second Creek just before it passes underneath Neyland Drive and flows into the Tennessee River.
The $3.7 million project will "stabilize the slope, shoreline and stream" by removing invasive plant species and installing native East Tennessee plants, according to UT's Facilities Services. Pedestrians walking by can see excavators in the water moving rocks to reinforce the slopes leading to the creek.
UT and Wilamut Construction Co. aim to complete the project in the fall, and UT's interactive campus map lists
October as the potential completion date.
Pedestrians can continue using the greenway as well as the bridge connecting the walkway to the John D. Tickle Engineering Building, which is near Neyland Stadium and the future construction site of the planned Neyland Entertainment District.
However, the pedestrian underpass beneath Neyland Drive is closed and blocked, so you'll have to use the surface crosswalk.
