Tennessee fans have long claimed that Neyland Stadium is the loudest stadium in college football. Now they have the numbers to back it up.
Neyland Stadium set the record for loudest scientifically verified crowd peak ever at a college football game by reaching 130.3 decibels in the third quarter of Tennessee's 26-10 win over Alabama on Oct. 17. That's the equivalent of standing next to a jet engine or jackhammer and is even just over a human's pain threshold from sound.
The previous record was held by Penn State from a matchup with Ohio State in 2007, but that was only sustained for two seconds.
After a second-down sack by Tyree Weathersby, Tennessee's crowd roared for a crucial third down with about four minutes left in the third quarter. Lil
Jon's "Turn Down For What" blared through the speakers. With the Vols up 19-10, fans screamed to cheer on their team and disrupt Alabama's communication.
"Louder than it's been all day," ESPN play-by-play announcer Sean McDonough said on the broadcast. "And that's saying something."

Alabama couldn't get the snap off in time and was flagged for delay of game. Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer grimaced.
"This crowd is definitely having an impact right now," added color commentator Greg McElroy, a former Alabama quarterback.
Neyland Stadium was raucous throughout Tennessee's upset win. It reached over 120 decibels on 105 separate occasions, and the game ended with Vols fans storming the field and lighting cigars to celebrate a rivalry win.
βJust want to start by saying thanks to our fans,β UT coach Josh Heupel said postgame. βI knew it would be, but elite atmosphere. Part of the game for four quarters. Phenomenal atmosphere. Great win."
The previous official record for noise at Neyland Stadium was 125.4 decibels, set in 2022 against Alabama. It reportedly reached up to 137 decibels when Tennessee played Georgia in 2023, but that wasn't scientifically verified.
Either way, the numbers back it up β when it comes to college football stadiums, Neyland Stadium is as loud as it gets.
