Light rain drizzled down on Hardin Valley's football field, fading into gray dots on Nicolas Rivers' jersey.
The wet streaks on his face, though, came from his eyes.
The senior was overcome with emotion. He played his best in Hardin Valley's biggest game in recent memory and literally sealed the 31-27 home victory over Oak Ridge on Oct. 16.
"This means a lot," Rivers told Knox News. "Since I was a kid, we haven't made the playoffs. All the seniors before us, they went through so much losing, over and over again. They could have easily tapped out and left. The foundation that the previous seniors before us left, it's what has set us up for success to be able to get to the playoffs and break this curse."

Hardin Valley's win over the 2025 region title runner-up set up a clear pathway to its firstTSSAA playoff appearancesince 2018. The Hawks improved to 6-2 and 3-2 in Region 2-6A. Oak Ridge is 6-2, 2-2.
Rivers was everywhere in the victory. He caught three passes for 63 yards and a touchdown, had eight carries for 56 yards, and snatched the game-sealing interception on Oak Ridge's final offensive drive.
Before the interception, his best play of the night was a 41-yard catch against four-star junior defensive back Zayden Williams.
"Nick Rivers is a tremendous football player who does not get the credit he deserves," Hardin Valley coach Tyler Wynn said. "When I first got here, he was a track guy. That joker can play football for anybody. The guy he lined up across is a four-star DB. He made a play on him, then turned around and intercepted that pass. He's not just a track kid."
Rivers wore black tape across the bridge of his nose with the word "physicality," written in silver ink. The Hawks wanted to set the tone on the line of scrimmage early.
The mentality also emphasized the team's strength. Quarterback Riley Matz only threw five passes and completed all of them for 182 yards and two touchdowns.
"I told Riley, my goal for him this week was to go 5-for-5 with five touchdowns," Wynn said. "I know he didn't do that, but it was exactly what I wanted from him."
Hardin Valley's playoff chase isn't over yet. The Hawks have one last region challenge at Cleveland (7-1, 3-1). While the win meant the world to Rivers, Wynn took a broader look.
"For me, it means we get an opportunity to try to get a home playoff game next week," Wynn said. "If we feel like we've arrived, we're going backwards."
