A teenager has been charged with reckless homicide after a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed at a Knoxville home.
Police were dispatched around noon Oct. 7 to a home in the 2200 block of Juniper Drive in response to the shooting. After questioning multiple juveniles at the scene, officers determined the shooting occurred when a 15-year-old boy allegedly was handling a gun and unintentionally fired a round, according to a Knoxville Police Department news release.
The victim was taken to UT Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Detectives are working to determine where the gun came from, according to KPD spokesperson Scott Erland.
The homeowner was on the premises when the shooting occurred, and is currently cooperating with
authorities.
A referral has been made to the Tennessee Department of Children's Services, as required by state law in the event of a child's death, Erland said.
KPD has withheld the identities of both teenagers involved due to their juvenile status.
