After two years of headlining a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, country music superstar Kenny Chesney is heading back on the road for a stadium-only tour.
“Get ready. We’re coming,” Chesney said in a release announcing the Original Vibe Room Tour, which will be during summer 2027 and will feature Eric Church and Sheryl Crow.
Unfortunately, the Gibbs High School graduate won’t be coming to Neyland Stadium, according to the tour schedule. A Knoxville stop was not on the initial tour date lineup. However, Chesney is the first headlining artist to announce a show at the new Nissan Stadium opening in Nashville next year.
“When we started to talk about touring next year, all I could think about was how good those stadiums feel,” Chesney said in release.
“Stadiums are where we come most alive – and this tour’s taking it to a whole other level.”
Why isn’t Kenny Chesney performing at Neyland Stadium?
Chesney – one of the highest-grossing touring artists of all time – headlined the first stadium concert of his career at Neyland in 2003. He was just the second musical act to headline a show at Neyland, which has rarely been used as a music venue throughout its 105-year history.
Knox News reached out to Tennessee Athletics to ask if there were any discussion about bringing Chesney’s summer 2027 tour to Neyland or if a Neyland date could be announced later.
“If and when there are updates to shows coming to Neyland, we will be sure to announce them,” University of Tennessee spokesperson Jason Baum told Knox News via email Sept. 15, while also redirecting Knox News to Chesney’s tour media contacts for more information.
Knox News also reached out to Chesney’s media contact via phone and email but had not received a response as of Sept. 15.
Chesney’s 2003 Neyland concert was the last time he headlined a show in Knoxville. He made a surprise appearance during Kelsea Ballerini’s 2023 concert at Thompson-Boling Arena to perform their song, “half of my hometown.”
Why are Neyland Stadium concerts rare?
In recent years, Tennessee Athletics has been mulling ways to utilize Neyland beyond football game days. Luke Combs and Knoxville native Morgan Wallen both played record-breaking shows at Neyland in 2026 and 2024 respectively.
Non-football events at Neyland are scheduled on a case-by-case basis and the summer months – like Chesney’s 2027 tour – present the best opportunity to host concerts, according to Tennessee Athletics.
In addition to working around football season and classes, another factor is filling Neyland’s huge seating capacity.
“Neyland is the eighth-largest stadium in the world; only a select few acts, artists, or entertainers can fill it,” Tennessee Athletics explained earlier this year.
Combs and Wallen have proven it's possible to fill Neyland for a stadium-sized concert, but sometimes it’s harder for Knoxville to compete with the appeal of bigger metropolitan areas.
Major stadium and arena tours are designed to hit big cities like Los Angeles, New York and even Nashville first, explained Stig Edgren, a music industry lecturer at University of California, Los Angeles. A city like Knoxville is likely to be included on the second leg of a tour.
How to get tickets to Kenny Chesney’s 2027 tour
Chesney’s 19-city Original Vibe Room Tour kicks off April 24 in Tampa, Florida, and wraps up Aug. 28 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The Nashville show is July 3.
