The announcement of country music legend Dolly Parton's death shocked the world, and it hit East Tennesseans the hardest.
Tennessee football fans have already started discussions about honoring the renowned singer and philanthropist from Sevierville. The idea of creating a helmet decal for the Vols to wear this season is a popular one on social media, and one fan already created a mock-up of an orange butterfly with Parton's signature on it.
One fan wrote, "Would it be uncalled for to have a Butterfly sticker on the helmets this year?"
The original poster replied, "Funny you say that, because I was thinking the exact same thing. A Helmet decal would be great IMO. **ahem** @Vol_Football let’s honor the queen."

The replies were full of fans supporting the idea and tagging Tennessee athletics director Danny White and Vols coach Josh Heupel. Neither had yet made a post about Parton's passing, although the Tennessee football and Tennessee Athletics accounts made posts on X from Parton's rendition of "Rocky Top" at a game in 2023.
Tennessee football used a stunning image from Parton's "Rocky Top" performance and said, "We will always love you, Dolly" with an orange heart. The official Tennessee Athletics account posted a video from the performance as well.
"Some sparkle from East Tennessee to the whole world. RIP Dolly," the post on X said.
Is Tennessee football allowed to use Dolly Parton decals on helmets?
There have been many instances of college football teams wearing helmet decals to honor the deaths of players, coaches or tragic events in the community.
Last season, the programs from Texas wore decals for Week 1 as a tribute to the devastating floods along the Guadalupe River that killed more than 130 people, including 27 counselors and campers from a girls' summer camp.
Furman football wore a helmet decal during the 2024 season to honor the memory of defensive lineman Bryce Stanfield, who died earlier that year during a work out.
TCU football wore pirate flag stickers on its helmets during its College Football Playoff semifinal in 2022 to pay tribute to the late Mike Leach. TCU coach Sonny Dykes was an assistant on Leach's staff at Texas Tech from 2000-06, and his offensive coordinator Garrett Riley played quarterback for Leach and the Red Raiders.
Most memorial stickers are in honor of people directly involved in the program or an unexpected tragedy, but the precedent is there to allow that kind of decal to be used by teams if Tennessee wanted to explore that option.
