Tennessee football linebackers coach William Inge will not attend the Vols' game against Texas due to a medical condition.
"Tennessee linebackers coach William Inge has been in the hospital dealing with a personal medical issue," UT announced in a school release on Sept. 24. "Coach Inge and his family appreciate your prayers and support, and we ask that you respect their privacy at this time."
No. 13 Tennessee (3-0) plays No. 1 Texas (3-0) on Sept. 26 (noon ET, ABC) at Neyland Stadium.
Inge, 52, also missed Tennessee's 42-9 win over Kennesaw State on Sept. 19. Defensive analyst Josh Sinagoga, who was on Michigan's national championship staff in 2023, is among the coaches filling in for Inge.
Inge is in his third season on Josh Heupel's staff, continuing
a 28-year coaching career that started at his alma mater Iowa. He was co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Washington when it reached the CFP national title game in 2023.
Inge coached at Tennessee in 2024-25 under defensive coordinator Tim Banks, who was fired in December. When Jim Knowles was hired to replace Banks, he retained Inge as his linebackers coach. Knowles was impressed with the culture Inge had created among the linebackers.
“(Regarding) Coach Inge, one of the things I learned during my evaluation period was that the linebacker room was the best room on defense, maybe the best room on the team, in terms of how close those guys are and how they work together," Knowles said in February.
Inge's son, Isaiah, played for the Vols as a walk-on defensive lineman in 2024-25.
