CAK football stars Seaton Moffett and Bennett Jelks endeavored to find the right words to describe the Warriors' 31-27 road win on Oct. 15 against Grace Christian.
Both landed in the same spot.
"Amazing."
"It feels amazing," Moffett told Knox News. "We haven't beaten them in the three years since I've been here. Going into the season 8-0 is amazing."
With the win CAK (8-0, 5-0 Division II-AA East) moved another step closer to its first undefeated regular season and region title since 2020.
Grace Christian (7-1, 4-1), coming off a shootout win over Class 5A power Sevier County, led 27-10 in the third quarter before Moffett directed three touchdown drives. He finished with 162 passing yards and a touchdown on 15-of-25 passing. He had 14 carries for 84
yards and a touchdown, and he caught a 40-yard pass.
Moffett is second on the team in rushing yards, and his legs carried CAK with a final 17-yard touchdown scamper with a minute remaining in the game.
"He's the ultimate competitor," CAK coach Chad Speck said about his quarterback. "You can't really use any other word to describe him. The guys just competes his rear end off. Some athletes have a will to win and refuse to lose. You know it when you see it, and he's got it."
Speck also heaped praise onto Bennett Jelks, calling him "one of the best safeties in the area." The senior leads the team with four interceptions and had the game-sealing pick on Grace's last drive.
"Don't let them get a first down, don't let them get a big pass off," Jelks said about his thought process. "I saw Corbin (Hobson's) eyes lock in with Terrion (Thomas). I had to intercept it and end the game."
CAK has remaining region games against Boyd-Buchanan and Lakeway Christian before the start of the TSSAA footballplayoffs. Speck has wanted the Warriors to make a statement against the top programs in the state.
"This is my fourth year as the head coach," Speck said. "We've really set out to build a culture. In high school football today, you can build a program a lot of ways: transfer portal, financial aid. Some people are flat-out cheating. We decided we were going to come in and try to build a culture."
