The section of U.S. Highway 441 known as the Spur will have single-lane closures beginning Sept. 14 and through the end of the month while crews conduct work for multiple projects, according to the National Park Service. Drivers should prepare for traffic delays on this busy stretch.
Closures are expected for several days and at different locations while crews complete storm damage repairs, utility work and surveys for future construction.
Throughout the year, millions drive along The Spur, which connects Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. The 4.2-mile stretch is one of the busiest routes in the area, with an average of 40,000 vehicles per day traveling the road during the summer season, according to the park.
When will the Spur have single-lane closures?
7 a.m.-7 p.m. Sept. 14-17
- A single-lane closure is scheduled for the southbound section of the Spur between the Gatlinburg Welcome Center and the Gatlinburg City Limit for storm damage repairs. The park will add stabilization to the side of the road, replace concrete curbs and add drainage.
7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Sept. 14-16
- Shoulder closures are scheduled for the north and southbound acceleration ramps near Huskey Grove Bridge for utility surveys for future construction. Personnel will be working behind the guardrails and medians of both the north and southbound lanes.
7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sept. 21-30
- Single-lane closures are scheduled for the north and southbound lanes near Huskey Grove Bridge for utility work. The park plans to start single-lane closures on the southbound lanes and then shift to the northbound lanes.
- These single-lane closures will affect the tunnel on the northbound side.
- Work on Sept. 25 is scheduled to be finished for the day at noon and will not continue over the weekend, according to the park.
Visitors traveling during these times might experience traffic delays. Temporary single-lane closures during roadside maintenance allow park staff to complete work safely and efficiently.
