Tennessee linebackers coach William Inge was released from the hospital, he announced on Oct. 14, after about a month-long stay due to an undisclosed medical issue.
Inge shared the news and a message of gratitude on social media.
“I want to thank all the staff at UT Medical Center for their amazing care and support," Inge wrote in a post on X on Oct. 14. “I was released from the hospital on Tuesday (Oct. 13). I have begun my rehab process and am getting stronger by the day.
"My family and I are incredibly grateful to everyone who has reached out, Vol Nation and especially our staff and team. Your love and support during this time has been inspiring. There’s nothing like the Third Saturday in October and I’ll be our guys’ biggest fan this weekend.
GBO!”
No. 14 Tennessee (5-1, 2-1 SEC) plays No. 7 Alabama (5-1, 3-1) on Oct. 17 (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC) at Neyland Stadium.
UT players and coaches have been wearing T-shirts emblazoned with "Inge Built" during his absence from the team. The Vols will continue to utilize analysts and other coaches to fill Inge's role. Veterean defensive coordinator Jim Knowles also served as a linebackers coach for much of his career.
What Josh Heupel said about William Inge's improved condition
Inge, 52, has missed the past four games after being hospitalized in mid-September. His condition recently took a positive turn, which coach Josh Heupel referenced after the Vols' 24-17 win over Arkansas on Oct. 10.
"There's a lot of people that have been praying – our football family, university, but our fans, too – and sometimes it's rare in this world that you get to see a true miracle right before your eyes," Heupel said. "But that's truly what we've been able to see following Coach Inge, and that's what his family has seen, too. He's doing really well. He should be able to get out of the hospital here the middle of next week, hopefully, and begin his rehab process.
"But if you ever question the power of prayer, anybody that's seen this can attest to the power of prayer. So, very thankful that he's coming out the other side of it."
Inge is in his third season on Heupel's staff and in the 28th season of his coaching career. He was co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Washington when it reached the national title game in 2023.
Inge and his wife, Rae Ann, have three children, son Isaiah and daughters Keara and Raya. Isaiah Inge played for Tennessee as a walk-on defensive lineman in 2024-25.
