The University of Tennessee at Knoxville estimates its fall 2026 enrollment at more than 41,000 students, another record-breaking year for the university even before classes begin Aug. 17.
More than 9,300 first-year and transfer students will start their college experience at UT, according to a UT news release. UT also boasts that it expects to exceed last fall semester's record 92.4% retention rate, which measures how many students return for their sophomore year.
The newly enrolled students were chosen from more than 74,000 total applications, which includes a record-breaking nearly 70,000 first-year applications (a 2.3% increase in Tennessee-based applicants) and a record-breaking 5,668 transfer applications (an 18.8% increase in in-state applicants).
UT will finalize the figures on the 14th day of classes. The current estimate includes fully online students, and it's overall less than the projected enrollment figure of more than 42,000 students shared during Chancellor Donde Plowman's Advisory Board meeting in May.
It's still a record-breaking increase for the state's flagship university, and if it holds above 41,000 students, that will be a near 600 student increase compared to last year.
More enrollment estimates before University of Tennessee's fall 2026 semester
UT has more early estimates regarding the makeup of this year's first-year class, along with other groups of students:
- More than 7,200 first-year students enrolling, including a record 60% from across Tennessee. The figure is combined with approximately 2,100 transfer students − around 1,400 are from Tennessee − to make up the class of incoming Vols.
- Freshman students are coming from 94 Tennessee counties, 45 states plus Washington, D.C., and 22 countries.
- More than 16.2% of incoming students are first-generation college students, meaning they're the first in their family to attend college.
- A record 749 first-year students are entering as University Honors scholars as Plowman plans on increasing the total number of honors students.
- A record 80 first-year students are becoming Army ROTC cadets, and a record 82 first-year students are becoming Air Force ROTC cadets.
Additionally, 97.7% of first-year students are receiving scholarships or financial aid, and 95.5% of in-state first-year applicants were offered UT education pathways programs including UT Access Collaborative, Verto Vols and Rocky Top Transfer.
UT is also welcoming its second class of UT Promise on Rocky Top students and its fifth class of Distinguished TennesseanScholars.
