The Knoxville Police Department is back to installing speed cameras near schools, but drivers won't get tickets just yet.
The cameras won't be operational on the first day of classes Aug. 10, and there isn't an expected launch date. KPD spokesperson Scott Erland said community members will be notified before the speed cameras operate and speeding tickets start going out.
Erland said 72 sites will have cameras in 41 public schools in the city of Knoxville. Erland said the contractor, Blue Line Solutions, is installing the cameras in phases through the 2026-27 school year.
The idea is to give drivers another reason to follow lower school zone speed limits and protect kids walking to and from class.
Here are the locations where cameras are expected
to be installed by Aug. 10, according to Erland:

- Bearden High
- Central High
- Fulton High
- Holston Middle
- Maynard Elementary
- Northwest Middle
- Norwood Elementary
- Pond Gap Elementary
- Rocky Hill Elementary
- Sequoyah Elementary
- Shannondale Elementary
- South-Doyle Middle
- Sterchi Elementary
- West Haven Elementary
- West High
- West Hills Elementary
- West View Elementary
- Whittle Springs Middle
"While that project continues and with students returning to the classroom next week, we remind motorists to drive cautiously and attentively when traveling in and around school zones," KPD posted on X.
