What was once a vacant Knoxville hospital campus is steadily finding new life, with plans for a 170-unit affordable housing complex on site.
St. Mary’s was once a thriving health care hub and served Knoxville for decades before closing in 2018. Part of the complex was demolished in 2020, and remaining buildings have been repurposed over the years.
The site is now home to Lincoln Memorial University's College of Dental Medicine, the city's Public Safety Complex and the McNabb Center's EmPATH facility.
Knox News previously reported senior housing was part of future plans for the site. We now know 40 of the 170 units coming to the property will be set aside for seniors.
The $43 million project, Riella at Oakwood, will have 87 apartments reserved for
"extremely low-income" residents. The complex will include a fitness center, playground, outdoor pavilion and dog park.
DGA residential will break ground next month and expects to to wrap up by June 2028.
