A new entrance and exit for the portion of G10 garage not being demolished is now open, while the rest of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville parking facility is scheduled to start coming down this week.
With demolition equipment expected to arrive on site Oct. 5, access to the garage and surrounding areas is restricted as construction activity ramps up to demolish the blocked-off eastern portion. The western portion of the garage will remain accessible via a newly opened entrance on Neyland Drive, according to a UT update shared with the campus.
"The demolition will be carried out using a controlled, mechanical top-down process," the update said. "Work hours are scheduled to limit impact to the campus community."
The garage, located between
Neyland Stadium and Food City Center, holds memories for decades of students and football fans who tailgated there for years. It also was part of a popular walking route from other tailgates to Neyland Stadium on Saturdays.
While UT confirmed demolition would happen this week, the university did not share a start date or timeline.
A new parking garage is expected to replace the demolished part of G10 by August 2027 as part of the 865 Neyland entertainment district. It will be built for event parking and will provide "a couple hundred more spaces," Tennessee athletics director Danny White said Oct. 2 during Chancellor Donde Plowman's Advisory Board meeting.
In the end, he said, the garage will provide a "way better parking experience."
Following the completion of the garage, a majority of the entertainment district is scheduled to open in early 2028 with a mix of shops, restaurants and entertainment spaces. The district plans to welcome a condo-hotel next to the stadium in 2029.
Barricades will be in place near G10 during the demolition period. UT is advising everyone to "use caution when traveling through the area" given the increase in activity.
