Every Fourth of July, Americans gather to celebrate the birth of the United States. We remember the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, as the defining moment when 13 colonies declared themselves free from British rule.
Yet for the people living in and beyond the Appalachian Mountains, independence was not a single day or even a single year. On the frontier that would one day become East Tennessee, the Revolution unfolded much more slowly.
In July 1776, there was no Tennessee. The region was still the western frontier of North Carolina, home to Cherokee towns such as Chota, Tanasi and Toqua, alongside a growing number of settlers living in isolated communities along the Watauga, Holston and Nolichucky rivers. News from
Philadelphia took weeks to arrive, and even when it did, daily life remained largely unchanged. Families still cleared land, planted crops, hunted game and defended their settlements against the many uncertainties of frontier life.
For many Appalachian settlers, the immediate question was not simply whether America would become independent, but what that independence would mean. British authority had always been distant and limited because Royal officials rarely ventured beyond the mountains.
British power was limited on the Appalachian frontier
When the Crown did project its power into the region, it did so primarily through military outposts such as Fort Loudoun, which was built in part to restrict French imperial expansion as well as to regulate trade with the Cherokee. It had very little to do with engagement with local civil government.
As a result, frontier communities often relied upon their own institutions to settle disputes, organize militias and govern daily life. The Watauga Association, established in 1772, had already demonstrated the willingness of frontier settlers to organize and govern themselves in the absence of effective colonial administration. Independence built upon traditions of local leadership that were already well established in East Tennessee.
But the Declaration of Independence marked a profound turning point for relations with the Cherokee Peoples. As Britain and the colonies entered open war, Cherokee leaders were forced to navigate an increasingly uncertain political landscape.
The Cherokee themselves were not united in 1776. Some sought neutrality, leaders such as Attakullakulla and Nancy Ward (or Nanye’hi) typically sought accommodation, diplomacy and peaceful cooperation. According to tradition, Nancy Ward even warned frontier settlers of impending Cherokee attacks in 1776, helping save lives at several settlements.
But other young warriors such as Dragging Canoe, who was Attakullakulla’s son, advocated for fierce resistance against the American settlers and concluded that an alliance with Britain offered the best hope of resisting continued settlement.
Enemies and allies clashed in a wider struggle for survival
Their divisions came to a head in the summer of 1776, when coordinated Cherokee attacks struck frontier settlements, including those near Long-Island-on-the-Holston in present-day Kingsport. On July 20 at Battle of Island Flats, Dragging Canoe along with other war chiefs like Oconostota and Savanooka, the Raven of Chota, attacked American militia.
Owing to Nancy Ward’s warning, they were defeated and withdrew, but not before Dragging Canoe was wounded, though he survived and continued to raid and attack Appalachian settlers for years to come. The violence demonstrated that, for many on the southern frontier, the American Revolution was fought not only against Britain but also amid a wider struggle over land, sovereignty, and survival.
For East Tennessee, the Revolution was therefore not won in a single declaration. It was forged through years of hardship, diplomacy, military service, and settlement. Frontier communities supplied soldiers, defended isolated homesteads, and gradually became more firmly connected to the emerging United States. The ideals proclaimed in Philadelphia would ultimately reshape the political landscape west of the mountains, but their implementation required patience, sacrifice, and perseverance.
As we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, it is worth remembering that the Revolution was experienced differently across the new nation. Here in East Tennessee, independence arrived not with fireworks, but with difficult choices made by ordinary people living on a contested frontier. Their story reminds us that the American founding was not confined to the halls of Philadelphia. It also unfolded in the cabins, forts and settlements of the southern Appalachians, where the meaning of independence was tested long before Tennessee became the 16th state.
