Despite Tennessee football's best efforts to avoid a fine for field-storming after a 26-10 win over Alabama, it must pay $500,000 for the offense, the SEC announced on Oct. 18.
The Vols (6-1, 3-1 SEC) beat Alabama (5-2, 3-2) as an underdog in their annual rivalry game at Neyland Stadium on Oct. 17, so there was reason to celebrate.
Late in the fourth quarter, once the Vols had the game in hand, athletics director Danny White shared a message on the stadium video board. He asked fans to celebrate in their seats until Alabama players and coaches had exited the field of play.
Per White's message, UT anticipated that it would take about two minutes for the field to clear before fans could enter it to celebrate.
At first, the plan worked. The final seconds
ticked off the clock, and fans remained off the field for a few moments. But then a few fans trickled onto the field from the southeast corner near the student section while Alabama players and coaches were still walking off the field.
That trickle quickly turned into a flood of fans onto the field, and there was no turning back. Fans lit their victory cigars, shot videos on their smart phones and celebrated with UT players. The goalposts did not come down because they were protected by stadium security.
As a result of the field-storming, Tennessee must pay a fine of $500,000 to Alabama. Fans also stormed the field after UT beat Alabama in 2022 and 2024 at Neyland Stadium.
There's a chance UT could have the fine reduced to $100,000, according to an SEC news release, if it can prove that a "full attempt to prevent the field rush storm was instituted, few individuals breached the competition area and minimal interaction with the visiting team occurred."
How does Tennessee pay field-storming fine to Alabama?
The SEC first instituted a field-storming policy in 2004 with escalating fines that started at $100,000 for the first offense, $250,000 for the second offense and $500,000 for each additional offense. But SEC commissioner Greg Sankey announced in 2025 that all offenses would draw the same fine of $500,000.
The money goes directly to the opposing school because of the perceived danger that field-storming poses to its players and coaches.
The SEC policy says that "institutions shall limit access to competition areas to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly credentialed or authorized individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest may spectators enter the competition area.”
Tennessee hasn't announced how it will pay the $500,000. It could pull it out of the athletic department budget. But another option is to simply ask the SEC to reduce its annual distribution from the conference office by $500,000 and increase Alabama's annual distribution by $500,000.
In the 2025 fiscal year, the SEC reported record revenues of $1.1 billion and paid an average of $72.4 million to each member school.
