The University of Tennessee at Knoxville just got a bit sweeter with the opening of the second UT Creamery, building on a 111-year-old campus tradition.
Located inside Torchbearer Hall, the creamery gives Volunteers a way to enjoy a variety of ice cream flavors made and served by fellow students, including a new cotton candy flavor coming soon. The name of the new flavor will be selected from UT-themed suggestions made by students at the Sept. 29 grand opening.
Each of the creamery's 12 flavors has a fun name, from Go Big Orange to Smokey's Strawberry Kisses, all of which are made at the John H. McLeod Food Science Building on the UT Institute of Agriculture campus.
Multiple generations of students have enjoyed the UT creamery since it opened in 1915
with a variety of dairy products, including butter, cheese and ice cream. The creamery closed in the 1980s but was revived in 2023 by Cowgirl Creamery founders and UT alumni Sue Conley and Peggy Smith, who helped open the first modern location in the UT Culinary Institute.
The creamery operates under the Herbert College of Agriculture and the Department of Food Science, giving students the opportunity to work in a variety of areas related to their fields of study. Students can take on roles ranging from production and manufacturing to retail business management and merchandising, as well as event planning, customer service and more.
Located on the ground floor of Torchbearer Hall at 1600 Volunteer Blvd., the new creamery brings ice cream closer to where students spend most of their time. The biggest winners may be the students living upstairs in one of UT's newest dorms.
