Meet the Troopers
The heart of the franchise is the chemistry between the five members of the comedy troupe Broken Lizard. You have Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar), the reluctant leader; Mac (Steve Lemme), the prankster; Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske), the eager rookie; and Foster
(Paul Soter), the most level-headed of the bunch. Then there’s Rod Farva (Kevin Heffernan), the loudmouthed, obnoxious antagonist who, despite constantly being suspended, always finds his way back into the chaos. Overseeing them all is the perpetually exasperated Captain O'Hagan (Brian Cox), who harbors a grudging affection for his disastrous subordinates. Their days are a mix of pulling elaborate pranks on each other and the poor souls they pull over, punctuated by moments of surprisingly effective police work.
The Gist of Super Troopers (2001)
The original film established the crew's core conflict: they were a fun-loving but undisciplined highway patrol unit in Spurbury, Vermont, on the verge of being shut down due to budget cuts. Their jobs were threatened by their rivals, the far more professional Spurbury Police Department. To save their station, they had to solve a major drug smuggling case while dealing with Farva, who was suspended for most of the film but returned at the most inopportune times. Key running gags were born here, including the 'meow' game (seeing how many times you can slip 'meow' into a traffic stop) and Farva’s obsession with a 'liter of cola.' The movie ends with them successfully busting the drug ring, but their station is shut down anyway, and they are forced to join the Spurbury PD, a fate they dreaded.
Where Super Troopers 2 Left Off
The 2018 sequel picks up years later, with the guys fired after a disastrous ride-along incident. They're brought back into service by the Governor of Vermont for a bizarre mission: a small Canadian town has been discovered to actually be on American soil, and the troopers are tasked with establishing a new highway patrol station there. This puts them in direct conflict with a trio of Canadian Mounties who are none too pleased about the American takeover. The plot involves another smuggling operation, this time for illegal weapons and drugs. After a series of clashes and pranks with their Canadian counterparts, the troopers and Mounties eventually team up to stop the real criminals. The film ends with the troopers being hailed as heroes and officially reinstated as full-time officers.
What We Know About Super Troopers 3
The third film, which was released on August 7, 2026, centers on a truly terrifying premise: Farva’s wedding. He is set to marry Thorny’s sister, Sarita, much to Thorny's horror. The plot, described as Meet the Parents meets Super Troopers, follows Thorny's desperate attempts to expose Farva as a terrible person and stop the wedding from happening. All of this unfolds while the troopers must also investigate a new drug called 'Canadian Crystal' that is hitting the streets. The movie sees the return of the entire main cast, including Captain O'Hagan and Ursula, Foster's on-again, off-again girlfriend who is now the Spurbury Police Chief.
